Diethylene glycol is a clear, colorless, odorless liquid with the formula C4H10O3. It dissolves in both water and many organic compounds and has hygroscopic properties, making it a useful industrial chemical.
Due to its hygroscopic properties, it is used as a humectant in the production of tobacco, cork, paper and cellophane processing.
In the gas industry, it is used to remove water from gas pipelines.
